My doctoral thesis “Accessibility challenges in Mediterranean museology” (1) addresses the broader theme of ‘Museums and accessibility’. It looks in depth at accessibility as a key requirement for improving museums and archaeological sites and making them fully usable. There is a growing awareness today that the very concept of museum and cultural heritage is shifting: museums are no longer seen only as places of conservation and display but as “dynamic spaces in which a dialogue with the public is set in motion”. They are key venues for cultural growth, where access to content is not so much a right of the person with a disability as a social duty of the community. My work focuses on the cognitive and cultural accessibility of museums and archaeological sites. Difficulty in finding complete information about what the museum embodies and in understanding the language used are also part of the right to accessibility (open culture), understood both as a guarantee of physical access to cultural content and as a guarantee of perceptual and intellectual access to the content conveyed.\n
